If your energy bills are climbing or your home’s air quality seems off, a dirty furnace filter could be the culprit. Replacing your furnace filter is a simple task that can improve airflow, extend the life of your HVAC system, and keep your home more comfortable. Here’s a full guide from our teams experience on how to change furnace filter from start to finish.

Where is your Furnace Filter

Before you can change the filter, you of coarse need to know where it is. Furnace filters are most commonly located:

  • Behind the return air grille (on a wall or ceiling)
  • Inside the blower compartment of the furnace
  • In a slot near the air handler or ductwork

Look for a thin rectangular frame—usually labeled with the size and direction of airflow. For reference here is HomeDepot link to furnace filters

How to change furnace filter

  1. Turn off your HVAC system for safety.
  2. Remove the old filter by sliding it out of its slot.
  3. Check the size printed on the edge of the old filter.
  4. Insert the new filter, following the airflow arrow printed on the frame.
  5. Turn your system back on and check that it’s running smoothly.

Pro tip: Set reminders every 1–3 months so you never forget to change it!

How often to change furnace filter

A good rule of thumb is every 90 days. However, you have to consider changing it more frequently if:

  • You have pets
  • You suffer from allergies  (you’ve suffered enough—don’t let your furnace filter be another reason).
  • Your area has high dust or pollen

Regular changes improve efficiency and protect your home heating system.

Hvac airflow problems &  AC maintenance

A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC system to work harder. This can lead to:

  • Uneven heating or cooling
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Overheating
  • Increased wear and tear on components

And of coarse higher bills to prevent these issues with regular furnace filter replacement and AC maintenance.

Best furnace filters for homes

When shopping for a replacement, consider:

  • MERV rating: Higher numbers mean better filtration (8–13 is great for homes)
  • Filter type: Fiberglass (budget), pleated (most common), HEPA (premium)
  • Size: Always match the existing filter dimensions

A quality filter improves indoor air quality and protects your entire HVAC system.
