Plumbing water lines

Issues with plumbing water lines are never fun and they can often be urgent and cause a significant amount of damage if not fixed right away. It goes without saying that you should always hire a professional plumber to locate and fix leaks in your home. However, this is not always possible and sometimes, you may have to repair a plumbing line yourself. In this article, we will guide you through DIY plumbing water line repairs. However, you should still make an appointment with a professional as soon as you can.

How to fix a leaky pipe?

If you discover a water line leak, the first thing you should do is shut off the water supply at the valve immediately. This will stop the pipe from leaking but also prevent you from using running water in your home.

Next, you need to locate the leak. You can usually spot it by pools of water, wet drywall, and other signs of water damage. If you are certain there’s a leak but you can’t see any obvious signs of it, go down to your basement and inspect the piping there.

Use a sleeve clamp

Once you’ve located the leak, it’s time to repair it. It’s best to have at least one pipe repair clamp on hand in case of emergencies. Follow the instructions on the package to attach the clamp in place. Typically, you will need to put a rubber sleeve right over the portion of the pipe that’s leaking and then secure a two-part clamp in place over this sleeve using bolts. Even though a sleeve clamp can be a temporary solution that works for a few days or even weeks, you should make an appointment with a plumber right away.

Use supplies at hand

If you don’t have a sleeve clamp on hand, you can try using other materials such as a piece of rubber and some other type of a clamp such as a C-clamp or a hose-clamp. Follow the same process described above.

Use epoxy putty

If the leak is located next to a joint or in another location that makes using a clamp difficult, you can use epoxy putty to temporarily spot the pipe from leaking. First, you will need to shut off the water supply, thoroughly clean the pipe around the leak and dry it so no water remains. Then, apply the putty to the area of the leak and leave it to cure.

Use fiberglass resin cloth or tape

Another way to temporarily fix a PVC pipe leak is to use fiberglass resin. This resin is activated by water, so you will need to make sure that the pipe is thoroughly wet before applying the tape. Then, simply wrap a piece of fiberglass tape around the damaged portion of the pipe and wait for 15 minutes.

If you’re working with a resin cloth, clean the pipe and lightly sand its surface. Then, wrap the cloth around the damaged portion of the pipe and shine a UV light onto the cloth to cure the material.

Silicone or rubber repair tape

This method will only work for minor leaks. Simply clean the area around the leak and wrap the tape around the pipe several times. The tape should be wrapped very tightly as it adheres to itself rather than the pipe and uses pressure to fix the leak. You should also cover the area around the leak.
